To prevent clumping and sticking, manufacturers coat ammonium nitrate with anti-caking compounds. It’s often stored in sealed bags or air-conditioned warehouses to avoid moisture absorption, as it is highly hygroscopic.

When the barrier separating two bags (one with ammonium nitrate, the other with water) is ruptured, the ammonium nitrate dissolves in water, creating an endothermic reaction that rapidly lowers the temperature, making it useful for first aid and sports injuries.
